Anything else we need to know about blackberries first?

Blackberries have an exciting, rich history, dating back aeons! It’s not easy for us to trace blackberries back through the years because they have adapted and proliferated throughout the entire world. Most prolific in northern temperate climates, these deep purple fruits are cousins of the raspberry.

The first records of cultivated blackberries began when Judge Logan cross-bred blackberries and created the Loganberry in California in the 1880s. Until then it seems that they were only found in the wild. I hope that you live somewhere where you can forage blackberries in the wild. If not, then be sure to find your local farm shop varieties.

Health benefits of blackberries according to studies

As you make your blackberry recipes, you’ll be pleased to know that these little wild fruits have lots of health benefits. Not least they are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. However, if you dig a little deeper, it seems that blackberries have been used medicinally for a long time. This is especially true in the olden days when we relied on herbal medicine. Potions were used for diarrhoea, dysentery, healthy gums, whooping cough and a whole host of things.

Medicinally blackberries are known for their anti-cancer properties. You can find out more information from this PubMed-cited study here:
