When someone looks this good at 98 years of age, I want to know why! After retiring at the awe-inspiring age of 95 from his job as a heart surgeon, Dr Ellsworth Wareham now stays active gardening.
So, what is his secret to health and longevity?
He’s been a vegan for about half of his life. That’s almost 50 years!
He was naturally inclined towards a vegetarian diet whilst growing up on a farm, choosing not to eat animals. Whilst he was drawn to leaving out all animal products, there was little information back in those days, so he was initially concerned about the nutritional adequecy of a vegan diet. As soon as he learned that adding B12 into a healthy plant-based diet would suffice, he became entirely vegan. Dr Ellsworth found eating this way offered a ‘fine’ form of nutrition. He certainly is a walking testimony to that.
Healthy vegan
Lots of unhealthy vegan diets have sprung up in recent years, so for health, it is important to mention how crucial it is to embrace a nutritious version of the vegan diet – like the kind I advocate here at Trinity’s Kitchen (wink, wink). He talks about the importance of excercise and having a calm, postive attitude in life too. Indeed.
Preventing a multitude of western lifestyle diseases
In the video Dr Ellsworth discusses the importance of this way of eating to prevent (and even cure) heart disease. Watching this amazing man shows me that eating a healthy vegan diet does a lot more than prevent heart issues. He is glowing with health. I have to keep reminding myself that he’s been on this planet for almost 100 years. Having personally enjoyed a healthy, vegan diet for over 21 years, I find it awesome to see where some of the earliest pioneers of veganism are now.
