Energy bites and balls have become popular in recent years. They are rather ingenious and usually super easy to make. Energy balls are so versatile that you could create a different version every day for the rest of your life! Today I am sharing my raw cacao energy balls recipe with coconut.

Rawa cacao energy balls made with love

Which-ever ingredients I use, I make sure that my energy balls always burst with nutrients and energy and even more importantly – are always infused with love.

This recipe came about a few years back, whilst creating food for a group of 22 beautiful souls during a workshop in Belgium. I was mainly helping out running the meditation workshop (but also tip-toed out from time to time to create tasty food). Anyway, when I served this treat, they’d just completed a deep meditation session.

Making food from the heart

Making food from the heart is an important part of my life.

Being in the kitchen is my main form of meditation. Not in the traditional sense, of course… it’s not like I am sitting in a lotus pose on my counter or anything. It’s more like a moving dance as I feel divinely inspired from one ingredient to the next. My favourite kind of meditation.

A person’s state of mind makes a big difference to the final outcome of a dish. If we feel ‘light’ and spacious within, then we essentially infuse ‘light’ into the food. Making food becomes a beautiful expression of our soul.

You’ll probably already recognise that being happy in the kitchen, mysteriously makes your food taste delicious. If you simply set off with the feeling that you are ‘making your food from the heart’, then it all just works.

Nutrient-dense raw cacao energy ball ingredients

This recipe includes a blend of nutrient-dense, organic ingredients to energise and uplift the mind, body, and soul. It’s a perfect way to give yourself a quick, yet sustained energy boost.

The combination of walnuts, seeds, and dates allows for a slower, gradual release of natural sugars (slower than if you were simply eating dried fruit on its own).

Raw cacao is loaded with nutrients

Raw cacao is a superfood, loaded with antioxidants,  protein, polyphenols, minerals, and vitamins. Cacao helps to stimulate the central nervous system, whilst inducing relaxation at the same time.

Every single ingredient is a bit of a superstar here, to be honest. Bringing them all together is just divine alchemy.

Different coconut options

You have different choices about which form of coconut you use.

If you don’t have coconut butter you can opt for creamed coconut which comes in a solid block. If you use creamed coconut then grate or melt it before adding. What is creamed coconut? Read HERE.

You can also use shredded or desiccated coconut in this raw cacao energy ball recipe.

Coconut is versatile – I use different types of it at various times.

What equipment do you need to make energy balls?

The best thing to use is a food processor if you have one. This is the easiest way to blend everything together. A food processor is a very handy piece of equipment in the kitchen.

You can use a hand blender as an alternative (although you’ll also need to find a way to grind the seeds with a nut mill or pestle & mortar). With a hand blender, I blend the soaked dates and walnuts together first and then fold and press the remaining ingredients in. This creates a lovely rustic blend.

A high-powered blender would also work. It’s best to grind the seeds and nuts in it first and then add the dates. It helps if you soak the dates first if you use a blender. The mixture will probably clag together, in which case you will need to scrape down the sides a couple of times to help it combine.

Where can you buy raw cacao powder and coconut butter?

You can purchase raw cacao powder and coconut butter in any good health food store these days. I’ve tried lots of different varieties. The key is to find fairly traded, organic versions of these superfoods. Here are links to a couple of my favourite ethical brands.

Raw Cacao & Coconut Energy Balls

Yield: 15 balls
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

A tasty cacao and coconut energy ball recipe, with coconut butter, walnuts, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, and dates.

Ingredients

  • 50g sunflower seeds
  • 50g shelled hemp seeds
  • 100g walnuts (or almonds)
  • 75g coconut butter (or creamed coconut block)
  • 150g pitted dates
  • 3 tablespoon cacao powder
  • Optional dash of maple syrup or coconut sugar (if extra sweetener needed)

Instructions

  1. Put the hardest ingredients in the food processor first. If you are using almonds instead of walnuts then put the almonds in first and grind down to a rustic or coarse meal). Add the sunflowers and hemp seeds and break them down into a coarse meal.
  2. Add the dates to the food processor and let everything grind down until it starts sticking together.
  3. If the coconut butter is hard then try to melt it a little and mash down, otherwise finely slice it, if it is in a hard lump. You can also use creamed coconut in place of coconut butter as it is virtually the same thing. Click the link to see what creamed coconut is (it is solid at room temperature unlike coconut cream).
  4. Add the coconut butter and blend until everything is evenly combined.
  5. Add the cacao powder and combine.
  6. If you feel like it needs extra sweetness then add a dash of maple syrup or coconut sugar and combine.
  7. Enjoy immediately if desired. You can also store in the fridge for a week (they will firm up after a couple of hours in the fridge. They also freeze well and keep for months in the freezer.
