Refined Sugar Free Vegan Desserts (Naturally Sweetened)
Many people are looking for refined sugar free vegan desserts that still feel indulgent and delicious. Over the years I’ve naturally developed a way of creating refined sugar free vegan desserts using whole ingredients such as dates, fruit, nuts and natural syrups.
After more than 30 years cooking and developing plant-based recipes, and many years working internationally as a retreat chef, I’ve found that desserts can be deeply satisfying while still feeling nourishing and balanced. Rather than relying on refined sugars, these recipes are naturally sweetened, allowing the flavour of real ingredients to shine through.
These recipes were created by Anastasia Eden, founder of Kind Earth.
Anastasia has spent more than 30 years developing plant-based recipes and has worked internationally as a retreat chef creating nourishing vegan food for large groups.
On this page you’ll find a collection of my favourite refined sugar free vegan dessert recipes, from simple energy balls and snack bars to raw desserts and nourishing baked treats.
All of these recipes are:
- completely plant-based
- naturally sweetened
- made with whole ingredients
- free from refined sugar
- naturally gluten-free
If you’re looking for healthy vegan desserts that still feel like a real treat, I hope these recipes inspire you.
What Is a Refined Sugar Free Dessert?
Refined sugar free desserts are sweet treats made without processed white or brown sugar. Instead, natural ingredients such as dates, fruit, maple syrup or coconut sugar provide sweetness while allowing the flavours of whole foods to shine.
Why Use Natural Sweeteners in Plant-Based Desserts?
Natural sweeteners allow desserts to develop rich flavour without relying on refined sugar. Ingredients such as dates, maple syrup, coconut sugar and fruit purées provide sweetness while also contributing texture and depth of flavour.
Over the years I’ve found that these ingredients work beautifully in plant-based desserts, creating treats that feel both indulgent and nourishing. They have a slower release of sugar compared to recipes with brown or white refined sugar.

Raw Vegan Desserts

Raw vegan desserts are one of the easiest ways to create refined sugar free treats because they rely on the natural sweetness of ingredients such as dates, fruit and coconut. Unlike traditional baked desserts, raw desserts are typically prepared without heating, which helps preserve the flavour and texture of whole ingredients.
Many of the raw vegan desserts I developed while working as a retreat chef became favourites because they feel luxurious and satisfying while still being naturally sweetened.

Energy Balls & Snack Bars

Small nourishing treats can be one of the easiest ways to enjoy naturally sweetened desserts. Many of these recipes use dates, nuts and seeds to create rich flavour and natural sweetness without refined sugar.
These kinds of treats were often favourites during retreats, providing a satisfying little lift between meals. They also make perfect plant-based hiking snacks.
Because these recipes rely on ingredients such as oats, nuts, seeds and dates, they naturally provide both sweetness and satisfying texture without the need for refined sugar. Dates are especially useful in refined sugar free vegan desserts, bringing a soft caramel flavour while helping bind ingredients together. The result is a collection of treats that feel indulgent yet nourishing – perfect as small desserts, afternoon snacks or energy boosts for active days.

Baked Vegan Refined Sugar Free Desserts

Baked desserts can also be beautifully naturally sweetened using ingredients like fruit purée, dates, coconut sugar or natural syrups. These recipes bring the comforting warmth of traditional desserts while staying aligned with a whole-food plant-based approach.
Baking without refined sugar often relies on ingredients such as ripe bananas, fruit purées, dates or natural syrups like maple syrup. These ingredients not only sweeten a recipe naturally but also contribute moisture and flavour, helping cakes and baked desserts develop a tender texture. With the right balance of whole ingredients, refined sugar free vegan baking can be just as comforting and satisfying as traditional desserts.

Naturally Sweetened Chocolate Desserts

Chocolate and natural sweeteners are a delightful pairing. By using ingredients such as dates, banana or maple syrup, it’s possible to create rich chocolate desserts without refined sugar.
Chocolate works particularly well in naturally sweetened vegan desserts, because ingredients such as dates, banana and maple syrup balance the richness of cacao beautifully. These natural sweeteners soften the slightly bitter notes of dark chocolate while adding depth and complexity of flavour. Combined with ingredients like nuts, coconut or avocado, they create chocolate desserts that feel luxurious while still being completely refined sugar free.

FAQ: Refined Sugar Free Vegan Desserts
What sweeteners are used in refined sugar free plant-based desserts?
Many recipes use dates, fruit purée, maple syrup, coconut sugar, fresh fruits, or banana to provide natural sweetness without refined sugar.
Are refined sugar free desserts healthier?
While still a treat, desserts made with whole ingredients often feel more balanced than those made with refined sugar. You’ll often find a slower release with natural sugars, meaning you’ll experience sustained energy for longer.
Can I substitute maple syrup for dates?
Yes, although it may change the texture slightly depending on the recipe.
It works best to swap maple syrup for another syrup, i.e. date or agave syrup, and dates for dried fruit, i.e. figs or apricots.
What is the best natural sweetener for baking?
Dates, maple syrup and coconut sugar are among the most commonly used natural sweeteners in vegan baking. With the right recipes you can also use date syrup, rice syrup, agave syrup, dried figs, raisins and fresh fruit.
Are refined sugar free desserts also gluten-free?
Sugar free and gluten-free are different things. However, all of the recipes on Kind Earth are also naturally gluten-free because they rely on ingredients such as nuts, gluten-free oats and fruit.
Do refined sugar free desserts still taste sweet?
Absolutely – natural ingredients such as dates and ripe fruit provide plenty of sweetness while also adding flavour and texture. However, be aware that if you pair a naturally sweetened dish with a brown or white sugar dish, then the refined sugar will probably overpower the naturally sweet one.
